Forrest City: Named for the Railroad, Named for the General

Forrest City is the only city in the world named for Nathan Bedford Forrest that is spelled with two R’s. The name reflects the city’s origin: in 1866, Confederate General Forrest secured a railroad construction contract from the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad and established a commissary camp on the west side of Crowley’s Ridge with approximately 1,000 Irish laborers. The camp grew into a town, which was platted on March 1, 1869. In 1874, Forrest City became the county seat — in a manner that now qualifies as one of the more colorful episodes in Arkansas government history. When citizens voted to move the county seat from Madison to Forrest City, Madison’s residents refused to surrender the county records. A group of Forrest City citizens resolved the impasse by traveling to Madison at night and stealing the safe containing the records. The 1972 courthouse now stands on the hill where Forrest’s camp once sat, a fact commemorated by a historical marker on the courthouse lawn.
