Morgan placed his least reliable militia in the front line, told them to fire two volleys and then fall back — a planned retreat that looked like a rout to Tarleton, who ordered his cavalry to charge — and then the Continentals and riflemen closed in from both flanks and the rear. In about an hour, Tarleton lost over 800 men killed, wounded, or captured out of a force of about 1,000. It was one of the most complete tactical victories of the entire war.
